Geico Pet Insurance Plans and Coverage
The Geico Insurance Agency sells pet insurance from Embrace and Trupanion. When you visit Geico’s website and click to get a pet insurance quote, you’ll be directed to either Embrace or Trupanion’s website.
What’s covered by pet insurance depends on the type of plan you purchase. Here are the types of pet insurance plans you can expect to find.
Pet Accident and Illness Insurance
Both Embrace and Trupanion offer accident and illness plans, which cover the widest range of problems and are the most common type of pet insurance plan. Expenses that are covered under these plans include:
- Accidents such as broken bones and swallowing a foreign object
- Breed specific, congenital and genetic conditions such as allergies, hip dysplasia and intervertebral disc disease
- Chronic conditions such as skin conditions, arthritis and diabetes
- Dental issues such as gingivitis, root canals and extractions
- Hospitalizations and emergency care
- Nursing care
- Diagnostic testing such as MRIs, X-rays and ultrasounds, fecal and urine tests
- Specialist care such as oncologists, behaviorists and internal medicine experts
- Surgeries including anesthesia, rehabilitation and vet/technician time
- Prescription medication
Accident-Only Insurance for Pets
Embrace offers an accident-only policy, which covers injuries like swallowing foreign objects or getting struck by a vehicle. An accident-only policy does not cover illness-related expenses, such a vet bill for an ear infection. Trupanion does not offer an accident-only plan.

What Geico Pet Insurance Doesn’t Cover
Whether you get Geico pet insurance from Embrace or Trupanion, pet insurance always excludes certain types of expenses, such as:
- Pre-existing conditions that happen before your coverage starts.
- Experimental treatment, including diagnostics and treatment that are considered investigational or experimental or not within the standard of care accepted by your state’s medical board.
- Grooming, including baths, dips, shampoos and nail trims
- Food, dietary and nutritional supplements.
- Non-veterinary expenses, such as waste disposal services, record access or copying, or any license or certification and compliance with a government rule or regulation (like a dog license).
Trupanion does not cover veterinarian office visit fees for accidents and illness. It also does not offer an optional wellness plan that covers costs like wellness exams, vaccinations, and flea, tick and heartworm prevention.
Although pre-existing conditions aren’t covered by most pet insurance plans, some do provide pet insurance for pre-existing conditions that are curable, albeit with limitations. For example, Embrace covers curable pre-existing conditions as long as they occur at least 12 months apart from each other. Common curable pre-existing conditions can include bladder, ear and respiratory infections.
Geico Pet Insurance Waiting Periods
Pet insurance companies have what are known as waiting periods, which is a specific amount of time between when you purchase the plan and when your coverage begins.
Embrace Waiting Periods
Embrace has a two-day waiting period for accidents and a 14-day waiting period for illnesses.
The two-day waiting period for accidents is one of the shortest waiting periods you’ll come across when comparing it with other pet insurers. However, the 14-day illness waiting period is average across the industry.
Embrace also has a six-month waiting period for dog orthopedic conditions. You can have this waiting period reduced to 14 days if you complete an orthopedic exam and waiver process. The orthopedic exam must be completed within the first 14 days of your pet insurance policy. If it is not completed within the first 14 days, the waiting period will be bumped down to the day of your dog’s orthopedic exam.
Trupanion Waiting Periods
Trupanion has a different approach to waiting periods. After you buy a policy, there is a 12-day period before your coverage kicks in. During that time, you won’t be charged a pet insurance premium. Once the 12-day period passes, your coverage starts and your pet will be covered for accidents and illnesses.

When you pay up front for a pet’s medical expenses, you submit a claim for reimbursement for problems covered by your policy afterward. With an Embrace pet insurance policy, you can choose a reimbursement level of:

- 90%
Trupanion offers you the choice of a reimbursement level between 50% and 100%.
